Reflexology

Reflexology is an hands-on energy healing technique designed to encourage the flow of chi, or energy, through the body.
Reflexology Defined:
Reflexology is a hands-on energy healing technique that uses gentle pressure or squeezing to treat illnesses and disorders in the body. The practice relies on the manipulation of the life force energy - also known as qi or chi - and the philosophy behind Reflexology is that by squeezing parts of the feet, hands or ears, we can affect other parts of the body. A standard reflexology map shows points on the sole of the feet, and hands, that correspond with all of the zones in the body as a whole. For example, the fleshy parts of the big toe correspond with the head. Reflexologists also believe that pain or other discomfort in parts of the foot signal problems in other parts of the body.
Reflexology as a Medical Treatment:
Reflexology practitioners believe that reflexology can treat almost any illness or disorder in the body. The main belief of reflexology is that all illness - whether a cold or cancer - is caused by energy blockages in the body. Therefore, manipulating the corresponding areas on the feet will clear the blockages, allowing the energy (or chi) to flow freely and clear the illness. Reflexology is also believed to relieve stress and promote lymphatic flow. While there is not a lot of research to support these claims, many reflexology clients report positive results from reflexology treatments.
Where to Find a Reflexologist:
Currently, in the United States, there is no specific licensing or certification process for reflexology. This means that that anyone can train to practice reflexology but that there are no set regulations or quality controls. If you are considering using reflexology, as a complement to conventional medical care, look for a licensed medical professional with reflexology training. Licensed massage therapists have to study human anatomy and pathology and should have more, basic, medical knowledge than the average lay practitioner. Many massage therapists also incorporate reflexology into their practice. Keep in mind, however, that a massage therapist cannot diagnose an illness and that you should never use alternative medicine in place of conventional medical care.
