Saline Nasal Washes

A saline nasal wash is a mild, salt-water, solution used to flush the sinuses. The saline solution helps relieve sinus problems by clearing mucus and debris from the nasal passages. Saline washes go by different names, including nasal irrigation, sinus irrigation and nasal lavage.
When to Use a Saline Wash
You can use a saline wash during periods of heavy congestion, as with a cold or flu, and during allergy flare-ups - to clear allergens from the sinuses. You can also use a saline was as a preventative measure and to maintain nasal health.
How to Use a Saline Nasal Wash
The best way to wash the sinuses is with a neti pot - a miniature teapot designed specifically for nasal washing. Neti pots are available in major drug stores, like Walgreens, and from online retailers.
- Fill a Neti Pot with 8oz warm water and 1/4 tsp salt. The water should only be warm enough to dissolve the salt.
- Stand over a sink, or large bowl, tilt the head to one side and pour about half the pot into the upturned nostril. Water may run out of the other nostril - this is perfectly normal.
- Lean forward, over the sink to let excess water drain out of the nose.
- Repeat with the other nostril.
- Expel any remaining water by gently blowing through the nose.
While using the pot may feel weird, it should not be unpleasant or painful. If you experience a burning sensation you may be using too much salt, or the water is too hot. Try again, using cooler water and/or less salt. You can also buy pre-made solution from the same place that sells the neti pot.
